L'as du barreau, qui semblait à jamais cantonné au Japon et aux joueurs d'import, a finalement tracé sa route pour imposer sa loi partout ailleurs. Pas étonnant de voir Capcom, maître des suites, sauter sur l'occasion pour aussitôt localiser la suite de ses aventures, gardées bien au frais depuis l'époque GBA. La loi, c'est moiSorti à l'origine sur Game Boy Advance en 2002, Gyakuten Saiban 2 devient en Europe Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Justice For All, mais il s'agit toujours du même jeu, et plus précisément de la même suite. Passée la première affaire introductive, qui le mettra de nouveau aux prises avec ce loser de procureur Boulay, Phoenix fera la connaissance d'une rivale bien plus dangereuse Franziska von Karma, la fille du redoutable magistrat Manfred von Karma, que les joueurs du premier épisode n'ont certainement pas oublié. Un duel qui fera des étincelles, surtout lorsqu'un certain Benjamin Hunter entre dans la de grand bouleversement à attendre de cette suite. Comme le premier épisode, le jeu s'articule toujours autour de deux phases distinctes, enquête et procès, les indices récoltés sur le terrain servant à contredire les dépositions inexactes des témoins en salle d'audience. Tout le principe du jeu revient donc à guetter tout ce qui peut faire office de preuve, et la sortir au tribunal dès que le témoignage présente une faille, même minuscule. C'est justement ici que réside la principale différence avec le premier épisode. Jusque-là symbolisés par des points d'exclamation, les droits à l'erreur apparaissent désormais sous la forme d'une jauge de vie toute verte, comme dans un bon gros jeu de baston. Une façon pour Capcom de pénaliser davantage les erreurs grossières et de mettre la pression sur certains moments cruciaux, quand toute la barre peut fondre d'un coup. Impossible de remplir cette jauge en enchaînant les bonnes preuves ; pour se remettre sur les bons rails, il sera nécessaire de percer les "verrous-psyché". Ces gros cadenas, qui viennent dynamiser les phases d'investigation généralement un peu molles, représentent en fait les non-dits des personnages, qu'il faudra faire sauter un à un, toujours à coup de preuves, pour faire progresser l'enquête et obtenir des témoignages exploitables. Grâce au Magatama des soeurs Fey, une pierre magique emprunte de mysticisme, l'ami Phoenix sera en mesure de percer ces barrières psychologiques pour faire éclater la vérité. Mais là encore, il faudra passer chaque zone au peigne fin et faire preuve d'un minimum de jugeotte, les phases d'enquête étant généralement conçues pour se finir quand tous les verrous ont d'objection ?Mis à part ce nouveau système de sanction et la possibilité d'utiliser le portrait des témoins comme élément de preuve supplémentaire, le déroulement du jeu reste donc le même, inchangé, avec les mêmes graphismes, la même interface et les mêmes animations, quitte à frustrer ceux que le premier épisode n'avait que modérément emballés. Et à l'inverse du premier épisode, il faudra se contenter des quatre chapitres de la version d'origine sur GBA ; pas de scénario inédit spécialement conçu pour l'écran tactile. C'est tout à fait correct pour porter la durée de vie au-delà de la quinzaine d'heures, mais il faut reconnaître que l'aventure traîne parfois un peu en longueur. La rançon de la gloire, qui nous fait attendre toujours plus d'un jeu en forme de bis. Pensé comme un one-shot avant le succès amplement mérité, le premier Phoenix Wright était tellement frais et rythmé qu'on parvenait sans mal à excuser les défauts. La suite fait un peu pâle figure en comparaison. Les deux premières affaires, capillo-tractées, tardent à convaincre, la troisième monte doucement en régime. Il faut attendre le dernier gros quart de l'aventure pour retrouver l'exaltation des débuts, ravivée par une mise en situation inédite, un vrai dilemme le reste, le jeu conserve les grandes qualités et les mêmes défauts que le premier, avec d'un côté tous ces artifices de mise en scène géniaux, ces tronches délirantes, ces expressions puissantes, ces retournements de situation improbables, tout ce qui rend l'univers particulièrement attachant, au point d'éteindre la console à quatre heures du mat' quand on était parti pour dix petites minutes d'interrogatoire. La qualité d'écriture est plus que jamais la grande force de la série, et cet épisode en fait encore l'éclatante démonstration. Mais ce conservatisme se traduit aussi hélas par une structure archi linéaire, un véritable goulet d'étranglement qui débouche à chaque fois sur une solution unique. Comme l'année dernière, le joueur devra consciencieusement valider une à une les questions sur les lieux d'enquête et examiner toutes les possibilités à chaque écran fixe pour progresser ; un processus long et vite gavant. Les phases de procès n'accordent guère plus de liberté, puisque les dépositions tournent en boucle même en cas d'erreur. Finalement, que vous ayez un temps d'avance sur le procès ou deux trains de retard n'aura qu'une incidence mineure. Tant que vous n'aurez pas fourni la bonne preuve au bon moment, point de salut. Il y a bien quelques alternatives possibles, notamment quand Phoenix cherche à faire pression sur le prévenu, mais elles sont rares et conduisent finalement à une même issue. Ce second épisode commet enfin l'erreur stratégique de proposer des thèmes musicaux beaucoup moins séduisants dès que l'on touche à de l'inédit, en particulier la zique des témoignages, quand le cerveau doit bouillonner.
